The slight variation in stitch tension, the texture under your fingertip, the way the thread catches light differently depending on angle — these are qualities that only come from a person sitting with a frame and needle for several hours.
Types of Hand Embroidery on Women's Shirts
Thread embroidery: The most common form. Flowers, geometric patterns, or abstract motifs stitched directly onto the fabric. At Haus of Handmade, our embroidered shirts use thread embroidery applied at the collar, cuffs, yoke, or as an all-over pattern.
Schiffly / schiffli embroidery: A fine cutwork and embroidery technique that creates lace-like patterns on fabric. The schiffly process uses needle-punch embroidery to create intricate floral or geometric cutwork on cotton or linen. Our schiffly shirts feature panels of this work at the placket, sleeves, or hem.
Mirror work: Small mirrors sewn into the fabric using thread, common in Kutchi and Rajasthani craft traditions. Mirror work shirts catch light dramatically and work best in natural fabrics like cotton and linen.
Dori embroidery: Cord work where thick thread or cord is couched onto the fabric in patterns. Heavy and textural, typically used for occasion wear.
How to Care for Hand Embroidered Shirts
Always hand wash in cold water. Turn the shirt inside out. Use mild detergent. Do not scrub the embroidered sections — let the water do the work. Lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight. Iron on the reverse side only, on low heat, with a pressing cloth between iron and embroidery. The embroidery will last decades with this care.
