Handloom Clothing for Women India: What Makes It Special and Where to Buy

The word 'handloom' gets used a great deal in Indian fashion. It appears on tags, in brand descriptions, and across marketing copy. But what does it actually mean — and why should it matter to a woman buying clothes in 2026?

What Is Handloom?

Handloom refers to fabric woven on a traditional loom operated by hand — the weaver's feet working the treadles, their hands throwing the shuttle, the entire act of weaving a physical, rhythmic process. This is in direct contrast to power-loom weaving, where a mechanised loom produces fabric at speed with minimal human intervention.

The distinction is not merely technical. When a weaver works a handloom, every pick (every insertion of the weft thread) is a physical act. The tension, the spacing, the evenness — all of it reflects the skill and the attention of a human hand. This is why handloom fabric feels different from machine-woven cloth: there is a subtle irregularity, a softness, a depth to the texture that power-loom fabric cannot replicate regardless of the quality of yarn.

Major Handloom Weaves in India

Khadi

Khadi is hand-spun and hand-woven — both the yarn production and the weaving happen by hand, making it the most artisan-intensive fabric in India. Khadi has a characteristic slubbed texture and extraordinary breathability. A khadi kurta in summer is cooler than almost any other fabric.

Chanderi

From Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, this silk-cotton blend is known for its translucency, its delicate texture, and its characteristic 'tana' (coin motifs) in the weave. Chanderi drapes beautifully and is one of the finest fabrics for occasion wear that still works in warm weather.

Mul (Mulmul)

Mul is an extremely fine, lightweight cotton muslin, hand-woven to a very open structure. It is extraordinarily comfortable in heat — the fabric barely registers against the skin. HOH's mul pieces are designed with this comfort-first ethos.

Linen Handloom

Handloom linen combines linen's breathability with the softness and slight texture of hand-weaving. It is heavier and more structured than mul but equally well-suited to Indian conditions.

How to Tell Genuine Handloom from Power-Loom

Genuine handloom fabric typically carries a Handloom Mark — India's government certification for hand-woven cloth. Beyond certification, handloom fabric tends to have: slight irregularities in the weave, a softness that increases with washing, and a density or weight that feels substantive rather than papery. Power-loom fabric is more uniform, stiffer when new, and typically has sharper selvedges.

Care Instructions for Handloom Clothing

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, or use a gentle machine cycle. Do not wring — roll in a towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade. Chanderi and silk blends should be dry-cleaned for best results. Most cotton handlooms improve with washing and wear — they become softer and more beautifully draped over time.
