Most people who build things in fashion start young. They graduate from design school, get into a studio, work under someone established, and slowly build their own name.
Mita Jindal didn't take that path.
She started Haus of Handmade in 2021, at 45, with no business background, no investor deck, and no guarantee it would work. What she had was 25 years of watching how clothes get made at scale — the shortcuts, the substitutions, the decisions that happen when speed matters more than craft — and a quiet, firm refusal to participate in it.
It Started as Project Bheem
Before Haus of Handmade had a name, it had a question. Mita called it Project Bheem — a deeply personal audit she ran on herself before committing to anything. Not a business plan. Not a financial model. A set of harder questions: What am I afraid of? What do I naturally do well? Will I keep loving doing it? Can I build something rooted in craft, not noise? Is it too late to start?
She sat with those questions honestly. Project Bheem became Haus of Handmade. And Mita became, in her own words, "braver, less fixated, more authoritative — but always learning."
The Design School Foundation
Mita graduated from NIIFT (Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology) 25 years ago. Her final year collection was funded with exactly ₹10,000 from her parents. The jury was led by Aki Narula, one of India's most respected designers. She won Best Construction.
That old-school process — tactile, patient, unforgiving — is still alive in how Haus of Handmade is built. The sequins are sewn by hand. The embroidery is placed by artisans. The lace is cut and positioned individually. None of it goes through a machine because a machine is faster. It goes through a pair of hands because that is the only way to do it properly.
How HOH Works
Every piece at hausofhandmade.com is produced in small batches out of the Noida atelier. When a design sells out, it is retired. No restocking. No overproduction. Each batch is made once and made properly.
The result: women who shop at HOH know they are unlikely to walk into a room wearing the same thing as someone else. Pieces are priced between ₹3,500 and ₹6,800. Free shipping. COD available. Sizes XXS to 3XL.
On Fear, and Showing Up Anyway
Mita is unusually honest about the fear that comes with building something. "I have no idea what I am doing," she wrote. "I started this brand at 45. No business background. Just a restless feeling of creating something big."
She's scared that made-to-order won't scale. Scared of letting down the artisans who depend on HOH orders. And she shows up anyway — because the customers keep coming back, and because every order is a validation of the decision to build it this way.
