Why I Started Haus of Handmade at 45 — And What It Taught Me About Second Chances
You know that feeling when something inside you is unsettling? More like... an inner voice prompting time and again.
For years, I felt domesticated. Like there was this whole part of me just sitting there, waiting for something big to happen. I kept busy learning other skills but none of it felt complete. Something bigger was waiting to happen, and I had no idea what.
Then I turned 45.
And the universe basically kicked me off the cliff.
When you get pushed, you can either fall or fly
People think starting a business is this logical, planned thing.
You do market research. You write a business plan. You know exactly what you are doing.
That was not me at all.
I just knew I had to start. The feeling was too loud to ignore anymore. My brother believed in me. My husband stood behind me even when I had nothing concrete to show him except this burning need to create something.
So I started with what I knew. Fabric.
I have always been creative, but when I came back to fashion after all these years, fabric felt different. It was not just material anymore. It became this canvas where I could express and experiment. Every design was a thought. Every piece was a feeling stitched into something you could actually wear.
And that is how Haus of Handmade began. Not from some genius business idea. Just from the need to create something real and beautiful for women like me. Women who are tired of squeezing into clothes that were not made for actual human bodies.
The part nobody talks about
Can I be honest?
The numbers don’t show up every month but you have to!
There were nights where self-doubt sat on my chest. Where I questioned everything. Am I good enough for this? Smart enough? Brave enough?
But then I would go to our workspace. See our artisans working. Watch their hands move across fabric with this incredible precision that comes from decades of practice. Watching them made me humble and grateful and gave a sense of purpose and joy.
What nobody tells you about starting late
Before Haus of Handmade, I thought I understood hard work. But building something from scratch is another fight altogether.
Building something from nothing requires a kind of dedication that strips you completely bare. You cannot hide from your weaknesses. You cannot pretend you know things you do not. Every mistake is yours. Every small win is yours too, but mostly it is just showing up when everything in you wants to quit.
But here is the thing about starting at 45 that surprised me: I was ready. Not because I had everything figured out. Because I had failed enough times to know failure would not kill me.
Your 20s are for experimenting. Your 30s are for building. Your 40s? Your 40s are for knowing exactly what matters and having zero patience for anything that does not.
I learned to trust my gut. Also to keep an open mind to perceive different perspectives.
What Haus of Handmade really is
This brand is not about fashion trends.
It is about making refined, versatile fashion clothes which you can go back to time and again.
Every piece we make is Made-to-order. We offer customized solutions. Which means yes, it takes longer. Yes, it costs more. But it also means when you wear it, it actually fits YOUR body. Not a sample size body. Not a model's body. Yours.
That matters more than people think. When clothes fit right, something shifts. You stand differently. You feel different.
And honestly, that is what I want. For every woman who wears Haus of Handmade to feel seen.
The dream I am chasing
Five years from now, I see Haus of Handmade in homes across India. Maybe beyond. I see a real community of women who get it - who understand that buying thoughtfully matters. That supporting other women matters.
I see our artisans thriving, not just surviving.
And if somewhere in all of this, one person reads my story and thinks "Maybe I can start too" - even at 45, even at 50, even when it feels too late - then everything was worth it.
Because here is what I know now: You are never too late. Potential does not expire.
