Onam 2027 Outfit for Women — What to Wear
Onam 2027 falls on Saturday, September 12, 2027 (Thiruvonam day). The harvest festival of Kerala is one of the most culturally distinctive festivals in India — with a specific dress code, elaborate flower carpets (pookalam), and a grand sadya feast. Here is what to wear for Onam 2027.
When Is Onam 2027?
Thiruvonam (the main Onam celebration) is on Saturday, September 12, 2027. Onam is a 10-day festival — Atham (Day 1) is September 3 and Thiruvonam (Day 10, main day) is September 12.
What to Wear for Onam — Traditional Kerala Dress
Onam has one of the most distinctive and specific dress codes of any Indian festival:
Traditional Kerala Onam attire for women: The Kasavu saree — a cream or off-white saree with a gold border (zari). This is the defining Onam saree. Traditionally: a cream/white body with a gold (Kasavu) border worn with a cream blouse with a gold border. Simple, beautiful, and culturally specific to Kerala.
Alternatives for non-saree wearers: a cream salwar kameez with gold detailing, or a cream and gold dupatta set. The cream-and-gold colour combination is the essential Onam palette.
Onam Colour — Cream and Gold
Unlike most other Indian festivals, Onam has a very specific colour tradition:
- Cream / Off-white with Gold (Kasavu): The traditional and defining Onam colour combination — the Kasavu saree. This is what most Keralites wear for Onam.
- White: Also traditional — the white-and-gold Kerala ethnic look.
- Yellow: Increasingly worn, particularly by younger women, for the harvest theme.
- If you don't own a Kasavu saree: A cream or ivory cotton salwar kameez with gold accessories is appropriate.
Onam Sadya Outfit — Practical Tips
The Onam sadya (feast) involves sitting on the floor for a traditional meal on a banana leaf. A saree or salwar kameez in cotton is most comfortable for the sadya. Silk sarees are beautiful but more difficult to sit on the floor in for a long meal. If wearing a saree, pin it securely before sitting.
Onam Pookalam (Flower Carpet) and Celebrations
Onam celebrations involve making pookalam (flower carpet), cultural performances, and Vallamkali (boat races). For daytime outdoor celebrations: a light cotton Kasavu saree or cream salwar kameez is most practical. For the evening sadya and family gathering: your best Kasavu saree.
